THE APPLICATION OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING TO IMPROVE ENGLISH READING SKILL OF GRADE 6 STUDENTS IN GUANGDONG PROVINCE, CHINA
Abstract
This study was devoted to comparing grade 6 Chinese students’ English reading skill before and after the application of Project-Based Learning, and to examining their learning satisfaction with PBL. In this study, 30 students in the sixth grade of a compulsory school in Guangdong Province were practically taught. The whole experimental process was divided into pre-test before the experiment, teaching during the experiment and post-test, questionnaire, semi-structured interview and statistical analysis after the experiment. Through the analysis of data, it was found that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores, with the average score of the pre-test being 10.10, and the average score of the post-test being 15.80, the average difference being 5.70 (28.50%). The average results of the questionnaire were all in the highest level, (For Part A: Interest and Motivation; = 4.26, SD = 0.88, Part B: Engagement; = 4.31, SD = 0.96, Part C: Efficacy of PBL on student learning; = 4.27, SD = 0.88), and the responses of the semi-structured interview showed that the students were satisfied with the application of PBL to English reading class. Therefore, the results of the study suggested that the application of Project-Based Learning improved the English reading skill of grade 6 Chinese students.
