The role of Facebook fan page toward online hate speech

Abstract

The purpose of the study “The role of Facebook fan page toward online hate speech” aims to monitor the role of Drama-addict Facebook fan page which effect on online hate speech. The methodology of this study based on content analysis of 65 posts on the Drama-addict Facebook fan page for 6 months during 15 January to 15 July 2017.


          The result shows that others issue is the most significant number of content that lead to hate speech, which makes up 47 posts (72.31%). Secondary, 10 posts (15.38%) concern the issue of nationality, religion and culture. And there are 4 posts (6.15%) that are relevant to social class and economic status. Moreover, the data from content analysis indicates that the level 3 of violence is the biggest proportion of hate speech content on Drama-addict fan page, which constitutes 39 posts (60.00%). The 3-severity level of this study could interpret that these posts provoke hate speech into target group and followers. There are 20 posts (30.77%) that are ranked in level 2 of violence. The content of 2-severity level aims to discriminate, block and separate target group who have different opinions. However, 5 posts (7.69%) are categorized in level 4 which intend to stir up the violent action toward target group.


Additionally, the study shows that Drama-addict fan page has content which harmonize with the social functions of media for 35 posts (53.85%), and also has content that do not match the social functions of media for 30 posts (46.15%).
