Abstract

The purposes of this research were to improve the competence of English listening - speaking skills by using task-based learning activities, study the efficacy of task-based learning activities on improving the competence of English listening - speaking skills, and study students' attitudes toward improving the competence of English listening - speaking skills by using task-based learning activities. The samples of 66 students were drawn from 414 student teachers enrolled English for Teachers course in the first semester of academic year 2018 by using a cluster random sampling method. The research instruments were the lesson plan for improving the competence of English listening - speaking skills by using task-based learning activities, pre-posttest to measure the competence of English listening - speaking skills, evaluation form to assess the competence of English listening - speaking skills and questionnaire to ask students’ attitude toward the task-based learning activities after learning. The data were statistically analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, percent and dependent t-test. The research findings indicated that the students’ learning achievement by using task-based learning activities on improving the competence of English listening - speaking skills was at a very good score (89.47%), moreover their learning achievement after studying the task-based learning activities was statistically significant difference at .05. Task-based learning activities on improving the competence of English listening - speaking skills were very effective  (E1/E2 : 88.13/89.47) which higher than the specified performance criteria at 85/85, and the students' attitude towards the task-based learning activities was found that they agreed at the highest level.
