The Survey of Facilities for People with Disability at the H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Academic Center Buildings and the Surroundings, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang

Abstract

Students and employees' quality of life improvement on the campus for convenient and seamless usage in learning and working places is an essential factor nowadays. This research aims to study the facility conditions for people with disabilities around the buildings of the H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn academic center at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. The facilities were built before the official public building's legal requirement for people with a disability was effective in 2005. The research surveys 34 study areas of the facilities within 7 zones around the administration building group. The survey reveals that 17 areas, equivalent to 50% of the total study areas, comply with the People with disabilities regulations and design guidelines. The other 6 areas, equal to 18% of the total study areas, somewhat comply, and the other 11, equivalent to 32%, do not comply with the regulations and guidelines. The result shows that the facilities were lack of inclusive design due to the following: Lack of improvement budget and understanding of design regulations and guidelines. Different pavements levels with inappropriate surface materials and no signages to facilitate the users. The building settlement causes uneven surfaces throughout the area. According to the earlier issues, they can cause harm to not only people with disabilities but others as well.
