Landscape Structure and Socio-Ecological Resilience: A Conceptual Framework from Satoyama Landscapes

Abstract
This study examines Satoyama landscapes as spatially structured Social-Ecological Systems and develops an integrative framework linking landscape structure with Socio-Ecological resilience. While resilience has been widely discussed in relation to governance and adaptation, its spatial dimension remains underexplored.
Through a structured narrative review of literature on Satoyama, landscape ecology, cultural ecology, and Social-Ecological Systems, this study synthesizes key concepts to construct a landscape-based analytical framework. The findings suggest that resilience emerges from the alignment between human land-use practices and underlying ecological conditions, resulting in heterogeneous landscape structures that enhance adaptive capacity and system recovery.
The proposed framework positions landscape structure as the mediating layer between ecological foundations and social systems, providing a new perspective for understanding and planning resilient Social-Ecological Systems. The study contributes to landscape planning by highlighting the importance of maintaining heterogeneity, integrating local knowledge, and aligning land-use practices with natural processes.
