The objectives of this research are to 1) study of the band’s tone quality that is a standard for student symphonic band contest and 2) to propose rehearsal guidelines to develop school symphonic band’s tone quality. This research is a qualitative research. Content analysis of books, researches, and information from the Internet were performed. Four expertise teachers were interviewed. Data was analyzed qualitatively by data classification, comparison, result conclusion and result synthesis. Later, rehearsal guideline was created.
Research findings reveal that 1. Band’s tone quality that is a standard for student symphonic band contest consists of : tone quality, ability to control the intensity of sound, performing technique, ability to control the rhythm and tempo, tonal balance, musical literature, and musicianship. 2. Rehearsal guidelines to develop school symphonic band’s tone quality are 1) to set training goal(s) 2) to determine the training content which can be divided to basic performing skill and performing composition 3) determine form and training steps which can be classified into 3 forms: individual training, group training and band training, 4) to select music note, exercise, music and equipment, and 5) training evaluation covering 3 areas: cognitive domain, psychomotor domain and affective domain.
