Abstract

The states of Samatha (tranquility meditation) and Vipassanā (insight meditation) are fundamental in Buddhist practice. When a yogi develops concentration through Samatha, it serves as the foundation for cultivating Vipassanā, which ultimately leads to the highest goal in Buddhism—Nibbāna (enlightenment). Samatha Meditation, the meditation objects of Samatha include: 10 Kasinas (meditation devices, e.g., earth, water, fire, air, etc.) 10 Recollections (Anussati) (e.g., recollection of the Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha) 10 Asubha (contemplations on the unattractive aspects of the body) 4 Brahmavihāras (loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, equanimity) 4 Formless Objects (infinite space, infinite consciousness, nothingness, neither perception nor non-perception) Perception of repulsiveness in food Analysis of the four elements. Altogether, there are 40 meditation objects to choose from, known as conceptual objects (arammānūpanijjhāna). Samatha can lead to the attainment of the eight attainments (samāpatti): the four fine-material jhānas and the four immaterial jhānas. However, these are still mundane attainments; they do not liberate one from the cycle of rebirth (saṃsāra) within the 31 realms of existence. Vipassanā Meditation, Vipassanā requires understanding the six domains of insight (vipassanā-bhūmi) before practice: The five aggregates (khandha), The twelve sense bases (āyatana), The eighteen elements (dhātu), The twenty-two faculties (indriya), The twelve links of dependent origination (paṭiccasamuppāda), The Four Noble Truths (ariya-sacca), Vipassanā uses ultimate realities (paramattha objects), focusing on the distinctive characteristics of material (rūpa) and mental phenomena (nāma). This is called lakkhanūpanijjhāna (contemplation of characteristics). Unlike Samatha, Vipassanā is the direct path to arahantship, enabling liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
