SOCIAL DIMENSIONS AND URBANIZATION IN BANGKOK: REFLECTED THROUGH COSTUME DESIGN

Abstract

This research constitutes an art-based creative research study examining the social dimensions and urban characteristics of Bangkok. The objective of developing conceptual costume design prototypes that enhance awareness and understanding of Bangkok's social issues through costume design. The study aims to engage human in recognizing the significance and realities of the capital city through an artistic lens. The research methodology employed multiple tools, including documentary research through academic literature, texts, books, theoretical frameworks, and relevant studies, complemented by in-depth interviews and focus group discussions.

The research process comprised eight phases: 1) Problem identification 2) Literature review focusing on Bangkok's social dimensions, semiotics, and visual elements 3) Fieldwork 4) Content analysis to identify keywords, thematic analysis, and visual analysis 5) Development of mood boards and sketches 6) Prototype development 7) Prototype evaluation and 8) Conclusion

The findings revealed a main theme for the costume prototypes: "The Darkness of BANGKOK," which was subdivided into three conceptual categories: 1) Urban class segregation 2) The rushed lifestyle 3) Cultural diversity. The study successfully utilized semiotic principles and artistic visual elements as tools for expression. Consequently, the costume designs serve as "cultural mediators," effectively raising awareness about Bangkok's social issues and urban characteristics.
