GAY WATTANATAM" AND IDENTITY NEGOTIATION THROUGH CULTURAL RECREATION IN CONTEMPORARY THAI SOCIETY: A CASE STUDY OF THE UBON RATCHATHANI CANDLE FESTIVAL

Contemporary Thai society is undergoing a transformation in its identity structures, where gender diversity has become a challenge to traditional cultural frameworks, particularly in the Isan region, where religious and customary values remain deeply influential in everyday life. This article aims to 1) study and define “Gay Wattanatam” as a contemporary hybrid identity and analyze its formation and expression through Cultural Recreation in the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival; 2) assess the role of the Candle Festival as a recreational and cultural Safe Space for marginalized groups and synthesize its implications for the concept of recreation and marginalized identities in Thai society; and 3) propose Cultural Recreation management approaches that enhance the sustainability of “Gay Wattanatam” and foster inclusive coexistence under the Equal Marriage Law. Drawing on literature synthesis, field observation, and cultural analysis within a contemporary recreation framework, the findings reveal that “Gay Wattanatam” is formed through participation in candle art, dancing, and costume expression that integrates sexuality with Isan cultural heritage, transforming into symbolic capital recognized at the community level. This demonstrates that the Candle Festival is not merely a religious ritual but also a Safe Space and a platform for symbolic negotiation that reduces prejudice and creates shared experiences linking conservative values with alternative identities. At the same time, it highlights the role of Cultural Recreation as a mechanism for fostering new understandings and cultural justice. However, the continued existence of “Gay Wattanatam” requires supportive policy mechanisms, inclusive activity design, and multi-sectoral participation to ensure that the Candle Festival becomes a model of Cultural Recreation management that promotes diversity, understanding, and sustainable coexistence in Thai society in the era of Equal Marriage.
