Abstract
This research aimed to explore the cultural contents presented in reading texts, audios, videos, and illustrations of the French textbook of Level A1 and A2. Four collections of French textbooks in both Level A1 and A2 were studied: Alter ego + 1 and 2, Tendances 1 and 2, Edito 1 and 2, and Cosmopolite 1 and 2. They were published from 2012 by French publishers and widely used in the universities in Thailand. For the research methodology, this study collected the quantitative data focusing on all the cultural themes presented in reading texts and other materials such as audios, videos, and illustrations. The findings revealed that there were 10 themes presented in the textbooks. The first three popular cultural themes were regarding French people (34% for Level A1 and 33% for Level A2), France (31% for Level A1 and 27% for Level A2) and everyday cultures in French speaking countries (8% for Level A1 and 11% for Level A2). Compared to audios, videos, and illustrations, these themes were found in the reading texts the most (62% for Level A1 and 67% for Level A2). Based on such findings, the balance of the cultures in France and in French speaking countries should be presented equally in the French textbook for Level A1 and A2. Moreover, it is recommended that the authentic materials including art photos, literature, movies, and songs should be employed to grab students’ attention and create the relaxing atmosphere in the class.
