“THE CAPITAL: HOW MANY HEARTS DO YOU STILL HAVE?”: A STUDY OF UTILIZING APPLIED DRAMA TOOLS FOR COMMUNICATING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PROMOTING A WELFARE STATE AMID NEOLIBERAL SOCIETY

Abstract
This research investigates the transformative potential of the activity “The Capital: How Many Hearts Do You Still Have?” which combines socio-political concepts with applied drama. Focusing on the notion of 'human capital' and its relevance in a capitalist society, the study highlights how individuals are compelled to invest in themselves to navigate a system where the state and capital collude for their own interests. By employing applied drama techniques, the research aims to raise awareness about the structural challenges in economics, politics, and society. According to the research findings, six processes were applied in designing the activity including 1) Play 2) Characterization 3) Props 4) Rules 5) Situations Design and Decisions Making 6) Reflection. Through the process of ‘play’, participants engage in a life journey that illuminates the increasing burdens and intense situations faced within neoliberal logics. The process fosters dialogue, feelings exchange, and debate, encouraging collective exploration of solutions and possibilities for addressing systemic inequalities. This research has analyzed the results of applying activities in three areas: Thammasat University, Bangkok University, and Khon
Kaen University. The findings reveal that the theatrical process can cultivate class consciousness and foster empathy among individuals through embodied engagement in shared experiences of pain within society. The findings highlight the significance of embodied experiences and cultural practices in cultivating class consciousness, empathy, and awareness, advocating for the creation of a welfare state that tackles social disparities.
