Synthesis of Letter Perception Theories and Their Implications for Visual Communication Design

Abstract

This article aims to: (1) synthesize letter perception theories from cognitive psychology literature, (2) analyze the implications of these theories for media design in visual communication, and (3) propose guidelines for applying letter perception knowledge in design practice. The research employs a documentary research methodology, using design concepts, visual perception, and design psychology as the theoretical framework. Data were collected and analyzed from studies related to Template Matching Theory, Feature Comparison Theory, Prototype Theory, and the concept of Abstract Letter Identities (ALIs). The synthesis findings reveal that the process of letter recognition is complex and cannot be fully explained by any single theory alone, but requires the interaction of both top-down and bottom-up processing. These findings carry significant implications for visual communication designers in selecting and designing typefaces for diverse target audiences — particularly for children and foreign language learners, whose memory representations are still in the process of developing and have not yet fully matured. The research proposes three practical design guidelines: (1) designing typefaces with high feature distinctiveness to reduce cognitive load in letter perception, (2) maintaining typographic consistency to support ALIs development, and (3) considering contextual surroundings of letterforms in layout design.
