The Study of Chinese Time Travel Novels: A Step into the Past and Startling by Each Step

Abstract
This article is to study and compare the famous Chinese time travel novels: A Step into the Past（《寻秦记》）and Startling by Each Step（《步步惊心》）. The study is conducted through the elements of the novels, then analyzing the similarities and differences of the results. Also, trying to find out the co-appearance and influence of the novel A Step into the Past which was written before on the novel Startling by Each Step. Found that factors that make the difference of the two novels are: Type of novel, Sex factor of the author, Sex factor of the protagonist, and period of time of the novel content. These has been revealing based on analyzing 1. The characteristics of the protagonist’s time travel 2.The protagonist’s adaptation and social-orientation 3. The story’s ending. In addition, the co-appearance and influence of the novel A Step into the Past are also found in the novel the Startling by Each Step which was written later.
