The Semantic Change of "Tongxinglian" and "Tongzhi" in Taiwan and Mainland China

Abstract

The Chinese words "Tongxinglian" and "Tongzhi" have experienced semantic change both in Taiwan and Mainland China, but the category of its semantic change are different in Taiwan and Mainland China. The Chinese word "Tongxinglian" which refers to the homosexual love have occurred in the "AIDS" and "psychological abnormalities" connotation meaning changes in both Taiwan and Mainland China. In China, the connotation meaning of "Tongxinglian" had ever linked with "personal morality". And "Tongzhi" which have similar extension meaning with "Tongxinglian", it have occurred "the same party members" and "same sex love" extension meaning changes in both Taiwan and Minland China. In China, the extention meaning of "Tongzhi" had ever refer to "comrade". No matter the connotation meaning changes of “Tongxinglian” or the extension meaning changes of “Tongzhi”, the process of semantic change are not the same in both Taiwan and Mainland China.
