Developing Community - Based Wellness Tourism for Senior Tourists: Mueang District, Phetchaburi Province

Abstract

According to the trend of current tourist behavior that places importance on health and Phetchaburi has been designated as a pilot area to promote health tourism, therefore, this research aimed 1) To study the potential of the community for wellness tourism 2) To develop an activities model to promote creative wellness tourism for the senior group to support wellness tourism for senior tourists at Old Town by Phetchaburi’s river community. The research methodology consisted of qualitative research. The surveys, interviews, and focus groups including in-depth interviews were conducted with the wellness route trail by senior tourists. The results showed that 1) The potential of the old town along the Phetchaburi River communities-based wellness tourism is outstanding in lifestyle, arts and culture 2) Activities to promote creative wellness tourism for the quality senior group according to the five aspects. The data analysis found that most of the samples were female, aged fifty years and over, education level was lower than high school, the habitat was in the central region, the occupation was traders or business owners, an average income was less than one thousand baht a month, has been traveled more than three times for leisure, interested in creative activities together with learning new things and receiving information from friends, family and relatives. Besides, the assessment of activities of all 5elements was at the highest level. This research is different in that the result has a prototype of community development assessment which revealed that this community-based wellness tourism development model is eligible as a model of wellness tourism activities and destination for the senior tourists.
