Abstract

The objective of this research is to study the tradition of midwife and the relevant rituals practiced and believed in Muslim society; Krong Pinang,Yala. And also it is aimed to find out the far-reaching of Islamic teaching and other beliefs which are contrary to Islam influenced upon the performance of this tradition. Then the next step looks forward to investigate what kind of factors which mix up various beliefs in the application of midwife tradition in Muslim society. The study finds out that this tradition occurred in response to the necessary condition of women descent deliverance all along the time memory. The influence of Islam on the practice of midwife tradition is explicitly seen through the recitation of surah Yasin and supplication which pick and choose from Quran verses together with some deviant beliefs and performances vanished. However, there are still some traditions and beliefs relevant to Animism, Hindu and Buddhism, for example, belief in the power of ghosts and devils, seventh height divas, soul worship and so on. This above mention unexpected practices result from the influence of Animism and Hindu religion that believed in by the previous Malayu generation.
