The Influence of Political Awareness on Political Participation of New Generation People

Abstract

This study aimed to: 1) To study the level of political awareness and political participation of the new generation; 2) To study personal factors of the new generation that affect political participation of the new generation; and 3) To study the influence of political awareness on political participation of the new generation. This study was a quantitative research. The research instrument used was a questionnaire. The sample group was 200 undergraduate students and 200 working-age people or Gen Z, totaling 400 samples. Data were analyzed by finding frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, and inferential statistics. For hypothesis testing, t-test, One Way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were used.

          The results of the study according to the first objective were as follows: 1) The influence of political awareness was at a high level. 2) The overall political participation of the new generation was at a high level. The results of the study according to the second objective were as follows: 1) The personal factors of the new generation were different. The statistical significance level is 0.05. 2) The influence of political awareness is related to the political participation of the new generation. The results of the study according to objective 3 found that 1) The political awareness of the new generation, including educational institutions, characteristics of candidates, political party policies, election campaigns, and influence of the mass media, are related to the political participation of the new generation at a relatively low level. 2) Political awareness in terms of characteristics of candidates, election campaigns, and influence of the mass media do not influence the political participation of the new generation. 3) Political party policies and educational institutions influence the political participation of the new generation at a statistical significance level of 0.05.
