The Development of English Reading Comprehension Ability Using Authentic Materials Through SQ4R Techniques of Matthayomsuksa 1 Students

Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1) to study and compare the English reading comprehension ability before and after learning using authentic materials through SQ4R technique of Matthayomsuksa 1 students; 2) to study students’ attitude towards teaching English reading comprehension using  authentic materials through SQ4R techniques  The sample consisted of 37 Matthayomsuksa 1 students at Nongbuawittayayon School, Muaeng District, Nong Bua Lam Phu Province, in the second semester of the academic year 2017. They were selected using cluster random sampling. The design of this research was a one group pretest- posttest design. The research instruments included lesson plans, an English reading comprehension ability test and an attitude questionnaire. The mean, percentage, standard deviation, and t-test for Dependent Samples were used for data analysis. The findings of this research were as follows: 1) The students’ pretest and posttest mean scores on English reading comprehension ability were 19.64 or 49.10 percent and 28.78or 71.95 percent respectively. The students’ English reading comprehension ability mean score after the experiment was higher than the set criteria of 70 percent and higher than that of the pretest. 2) The students’ attitude towards teaching English reading comprehension ability using authentic materials through SQ4R technique was at good level.
