Abstract

This research aimed to: 1) study the components of leadership in crisis situations of Mr. Tawee Boonyaket, and 2) develop a leadership model in crisis situations of Mr. Tawee Boonyaket. The research employed a qualitative research approach, utilizing document analysis and synthesis of relevant historical records, together with in-depth interviews with seven key informants selected through purposive sampling, to extract preliminary components of crisis leadership. The research instrument consisted of a semi-structured interview guide, which demonstrated a reliability coefficient of 0.938. The collected data were systematically analyzed and synthesized to develop a crisis leadership model of Tawee Boonyaket.

The findings reveal that Tawee Boonyaket’s crisis leadership can be characterized as transitional leadership operating within the context of compound crises in Thailand following World War II. Key components of his crisis leadership include strategic decision-making under constraints of time and authority, the preservation of national security and sovereignty, the use of symbolic and institutional power to restore legitimacy, strategic communication, and the integration of state resources. Quantitative findings further indicate that respondents rated all leadership components at a high level. The integration of qualitative and quantitative results led to the development of the STRIDENT–CALM Model, which explains crisis leadership as a balance between decisiveness in crisis control and prudence in communication and legitimacy restoration. This model is consistent with the Crisis Leadership framework and provides a systematic explanation of leadership in transitional state contexts.
