Abstract

Population ageing has emerged as a critical challenge for public administration and local development, making the improvement of older adults’ quality of life an increasingly important policy issue. This study aimed to examine the dimensions associated with the quality of life of older adults, analyze the influence of health promotion, social participation, occupational support, and lifelong learning on their quality of life, and explore appropriate approaches and policy recommendations for enhancing the quality of life of older adults in Ko Chan Subdistrict Municipality, Chonburi Province, Thailand. A mixed-methods research design was employed. Quantitative data were collected from 230 older adults, while qualitative data were obtained from 15 key informants through semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, and content analysis.

The findings revealed that the overall quality of life of older adults was at a high level (  = 3.94, S.D. = 0.69), with health, social, and environmental dimensions receiving the highest ratings. Health promotion, social participation, occupational support, and lifelong learning significantly and positively influenced the quality of life of older adults at the .01 level, jointly explaining 55.80 percent of the variance. Qualitative findings identified four key approaches for improving older adults’ quality of life: proactive health promotion, enhanced social participation, support for occupational and income-generating opportunities, and the promotion of lifelong learning. The study further suggests that local governments should strengthen collaboration with healthcare agencies, educational institutions, community organizations, families, and other stakeholders to develop integrated policies and programs that support active ageing, social inclusion, and sustainable quality of life improvement among older adults.
