Revealed Comparative Advantage of Rubber Exports between Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia

The study aimed to study the competitive advantage of rubber export in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia by using Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA). Secondary data used were annual time-series data from 2009 to 2013. The results showed that Thailand is the only country that has the potential of comparative advantage in exporting latex, smoked rubber sheets and block rubber due to RCA index higher than 1. Indonesia has the potential and competitiveness in exporting only smoked rubber sheets and block rubber. For latex can be seen that Indonesia has a disadvantage because the RCA index is less than 1. Therefore, Indonesia may lose the ability to compete in the production of rubber in the world market. Malaysia has RCA index greater than 1 in exporting latex and block rubber except for smoked rubber sheets with RCA index less than 1. Therefore showing that Thailand has the greatest advantage and potential, thus, should accelerate the production of latex, smoked rubber sheets and block rubber for sale to the world market. Furthermore, the Thai government should focus on and support domestic rubber production in order to increase the competitiveness of other countries and to create sustainability for Thai rubber exports in the future.
