The Workings of the Thai Elderly and Their Earnings

Abstract
Most Thai elderly labors still work full time and are most active in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles, motorcycles, personal and household goods sector, the hotels and restaurants sector, and the manufacturing sector. This study analyzes the opportunities and capabilities of the elderly work by using the age-earnings profile of labors in these three sectors. The shapes of age-earnings profile of labors look differently as related to each occupation and economic sector. The changes of earnings over the life of workers can be explained by the ability to accumulate human capital, and the quick deteriorating physical capabilities of workers. Moreover, the discrimination on gender and age of workers might influence the shapes of age-earnings profile of labors in certain occupations and economic sectors. Hence, to support the elderly workings, the effective measures must be taken into account regarding both the opportunities and the compensation that the elderly labors would get to continue working in each occupation and economic sector.
การทำงานและผลตอบแทนแรงงานของผู้สูงอายุไทย
แรงงานผู้สูงอายุไทยส่วนใหญ่ยังคงทำงานเต็มเวลาและทำงานอยู่มากที่สุดในภาคการขายส่งและขายปลีก ซ่อมแซมยานยนต์ รถจักรยานยนต์ ของใช้ส่วนบุคคลและของใช้ในครัวเรือน ภาคโรงแรมและภัตตาคาร และภาคการผลิต งานศึกษานี้วิเคราะห์โอกาสและความสามารถในการทำงานของผู้สูงอายุโดยการพิจารณาโครงร่างผลตอบแทนตามอายุของแรงงานในสามภาคเศรษฐกิจดังกล่าว โครงร่างผลตอบแทนตามอายุของแรงงานมีลักษณะที่แตกต่างกันไปในแต่ละอาชีพและภาคเศรษฐกิจ การเปลี่ยนแปลงของผลตอบแทนตามอายุของแรงงานเหล่านั้นอธิบายได้จากผลของความสามารถในการสะสมทุนมนุษย์ และความเร็วของความเสื่อมถอยในสมรรถนะทางกายของแรงงาน นอกจากนี้ ยังมีข้อสังเกตเกี่ยวกับการเลือกปฏิบัติด้านเพศและอายุของแรงงานซึ่งอาจมีผลต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงของผลตอบแทนตามอายุของแรงงานในบางอาชีพและภาคเศรษฐกิจด้วย ดังนั้น การดำเนินมาตรการอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพเพื่อสนับสนุนการทำงานของผู้สูงอายุจึงต้องคำนึงถึงทั้งโอกาสและค่าตอบแทนที่ผู้สูงอายุจะได้รับในการทำงานต่อไปในแต่ละอาชีพและภาคเศรษฐกิจ
