The Impact of The Corona Epidemic Disease (COVID 2019) on The Socio-Economic Conditions and Guideline for The Management of Coastal Communities in Phuket Province

Abstract

            A study focused on 1) the impact of the corona epidemic disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the socio-economic conditions of coastal communities, and 2) guideline for the management of Coastal Communities in Phuket Province. The study was conducted in coastal communities in Thalang District and Mueang Phuket District, using mixed method approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods. It included a questionnaire of 380 coastal community populations, two focus group meetings with members of the Marine and Coastal Resource Conservation Network, and one provincial-level forum. The study found, with 72.1% of the sample group was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased occupation costs, reduced sales, business closures, a rise in unemployment, and growing levels of debt. The variables associated with the impact of COVID-19 on the livelihoods of coastal communities in Phuket Province include four factors: 1) Membership in a savings cooperative, 2) Access to loans from specialized financial institutions, 3) Access to loans from commercial banks, and 4) levels of debt. The management approach focuses on conserving marine and coastal resources, reducing household expenses, and seeking additional income. Four key strategies can be formulated to prepare for the long-term response to the COVID-19 epidemic, 1) driving the community economy and society based on marine and coastal resources; 2) raising the value of coastal community productivity to enhance the quality of life of coastal communities; 3) enhancing management efficiency in accordance with village fund guidelines and loc al financial institutions; and 4) promoting participative and sustainable mangrove and marine and coastal resources management.
