Public participation in open burning control

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study the situation of open burning in rural area in Kumphawapee District, Udon thani, and use public participation in open burning control. From interviewing the 400 people in 11 villages, it was found that 61.7% of them had no the waste seperation, 64.8 % had waste disposal by open burning. Most of open burning problems in the agricultural area was occurred from the sugar cane burning in the fields. The public participation activities included the brainstorming meeting with the administrators of sub-district municipality in order to identify and recognize of air pollution problems, and solve the problems by setting up the local regulation for open burning control. Health personnel had been approached by providing knowledge of waste reduction and making bio- fertilizer from food/vegetable residue, as well as encouraging the people in local area for open burning reduction. The open burning problems in agriculture area should be solved by participation of community, farmers and the factories who buy the agricultural produces .
