Factors affecting the performance of university officers (teaching staff) Khon Kaen University

Abstract

The study is Cross Sectional Descriptive Research. The purpose of this study was to study motivation and organizational support affecting the performance of University Officers (Teaching Staff) in Khon Kaen University. Samples were 105 persons selected by systematic random sampling from 362 University Officers. Questionnaires were used and checked by three experts, while reliability was checked by the Cronbach Alpha Coefficient technique = 0.94. Also there was an in-depth interview from 12 key informants. Data were collected between 1 March 2008 and 31 March 2008 and analyzed by SPSS for Windows to acquire percentage, mean, standard deviation, median, maximum, minimum, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis. The results revealed that: the total motivation was related to the performance of University Officers, Khon Kaen University at a high level (r = 0.752, P-value = 0.01); the motivation factors and the hygiene factors were related to the performance of University Officers, Khon Kaen University at a moderate and high level (r = 0.694, 0.706, P-value = 0.01); and the organizational support factors were related to the performance of University Officers, Khon Kaen University at a moderate level (r = 0.506, P-value = 0.01). Five factors including the hygiene factor of administrative policy, the motivation factors of responsibilities, recognition and job characteristics and also an organizational support factor being personnel affected the performance of University Officers, Khon Kaen University at 82.0%. The problems, obstacles and recommendations of the performance of University Officers, Khon Kaen University were the huge teaching load, the lack of budgeting support in terms of knowledge development and research, and also the lack of mentoring for concrete academic development to get promotion to Assistant and Associate Professor.
