Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the validity of the results of the main prizes of the
two - and three digit Lao and Thai lotteries by using chi-squared, and to study the expected prize from buying
a lottery ticket from 2003 to 2006, or 90 issues. The findings were that Lao three-digit lottery was valid (p>0.05), whereas the hundreds digit of the Thai three-digit lottery was invalid (p<0.05). Number 5 came out most, accounting for 17.78% of the total and number 2 came out least with 1.11% of the total. Both the tens and the units digits of the two digit lottery for both Laos and Thailand were valid (p>0.05). The expected prizes from buying three-digit Lao and Thai lotteries were: if buying 20 baht (5,000 kip) of the Lao lottery, one would on average lose 12 baht (3,000 kip), or 1 baht against 0.60 baht. In comparison with the Thai lottery, if buying 40 baht of Thai lottery one would on average lose 16 baht or 0.40 baht against 1 baht. Therefore buying a three-digit Thai lottery ticket has a higher expectation of prize than the Lao lottery. If buying a Thai two-digit ticket for 1 baht, one would on average lose 0.35 baht whereas buying a two-digit Lao lottery ticket one would lose on average 0.40 baht. So buying a Thai two-digit ticket one has higher expectation of a prize than buying a Lao two-digit ticket.
