Abstract

Aloe vera is an easily grown plant. Its mucilage or gel part is useful for preparation as food, drug and cosmetics. The spray drying with carriers method was performed to obtain the dried form of aloe gel. Lactose (10%) is a suitable carrier. The dried aloe gel power is relatively solubilized in water and gives rise to a viscous solution. Moreover, a clear gel can be obtained when using 0.1% atoe gel powder in carbopol 934 gel base. Although mannitol or maltodextrin at 10% concentration gave dried aloe gel powder with better aqueous solubility, the solutions have lower viscosity than those using lactose as carrier. Protein and aloin contents of these dried powders were not much different. The results demonstrated that spray drying with lactose as carrier will be useful for large quantity preparation of aloe gel powder, which is more convenient than using the freshly prepared aloe gei.
