Abstract

Many pesticides are very toxic and most of them are controlled. If pesticide stores illegally sell controlled pesticides, this use may impact users, consumers, health and the environment. The objectives of this survey were to survey the type of controlled pesticides that were illegally sold by pesticide stores in Muang (7 stores), Nong-Rua (5 stores), Ban Pai (5 stores) and Nam Pong (5 stores) Districts in Khon Kaen Province, a total of 22 stores. The survey took place between June and September 2004. The survey found that the number of pesticide stores illegally selling controlled pesticides was 20 stores (90.91 %). Muang District had 7 stores (100%), Nam Pong District 4 stores (80%), Nong-Rua District 4 stores (80 %), and Ban Pai District 5 stores (100%). We found the types of controlled pesticides were methamidophos, mevinphos and monocrotophos. Mevinphos was the type most sold illegally (19 stores) followed by methamidophos (7 stores), and monocrotophos (6 stores). The members of stores illegally selling 3, 2 and 1 types of controlled pesticides were 3 stores (15%), 6 stores (30%), and 11 stores (55 %) from 20 stores. Stores illegally selling 3 types of controlled pesticides were found in Muang District, Nam Pong District and Nong-Rua District. Illegal sales of 2 types and 1 type were found in every District. Muang District had the most sales of controlled pesticides.
