Abstract

This research and development study aimed to 1) develop an English instructional model emphasizing active participation integrated with social media (the ENGAGE Model) for Grade 11 students through a Professional Learning Community (PLC) process, 2) examine the effects of the developed model on students' English communicative ability, and 3) examine the effects of the developed model on students' English speaking anxiety. The target group consisted of 20 Grade 11/1 students at Srisema Witthayasoem School in the first semester of the 2026 academic year, selected through purposive sampling. Research instruments comprised the ENGAGE Model with 12 lesson plans, an English communicative ability rating scale, an English speaking anxiety scale, a behavioral observation form, and a semi-structured interview guide. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a paired-samples t-test, Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient, and content analysis. The findings revealed that: 1) the ENGAGE Model, developed through the PLC process, was rated by five experts as highly appropriate overall (X̄ = 4.65), and the 12 lesson plans were rated as highly appropriate (X̄ = 4.21); 2) students' English communicative ability after the intervention (X̄ = 17.35, S.D. = 2.18) was significantly higher than before the intervention (X̄ = 14.35, S.D. = 1.23) at the .05 level (t = 7.427, p < .001, Cohen's d = 1.66); and 3) students' English speaking anxiety decreased significantly at the .05 level, with post-intervention positive-feeling scores (X̄ = 76.65, S.D. = 3.77) significantly higher than pre-intervention scores (X̄ = 60.40, S.D. = 5.38) (t = 13.133, p < .001, Cohen's d = 2.94). Qualitative findings from behavioral observations and interviews were consistent with the quantitative results, indicating that the ENGAGE Model effectively enhanced English communicative ability and reduced speaking anxiety.
