Using Activity-Based Learning to Develop the English Listening and Speaking Skills of Grade 4 Students

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to 1) study the conditions and problems of learning management to develop the English Listening and Speaking Skills of Grade 4 Students, 2) develop an Activity-Based Learning Management Plan to develop the English Listening and Speaking Skills of Grade 4 Students, and 3) compare the results of the developing the English listening and Speaking Skills of Grade 4 Students before and after using Activity-Based Learning. The target group was 24 students of grade 4 students at Ban Pa Bong School, San Sai District, Chiang Mai Province in the first term of the academic year 2024. The experimental instruments consisted interview form, a questionnaire, an Activity-Based Learning lesson plan, and the English Listening and Speaking Skills Proficiency Test. The collected data were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and percentage of progress. The finding revealed that 1) the suitable conditions and problems of learning management to develop the English Listening and Speaking skills of Grade 4 Students were found that most students were from the Tai Yai ethnic group and faced difficulties in English communication, which slowed their learning progress. The main causes included a lack of confidence, reluctance to express themselves, and limited opportunities to use the language in daily life. Overemphasis on theoretical learning resulted in insufficient practical training. The essential skills identified for development were English listening and speaking Skills by using Activity-Based Learning. According to the survey of opinions are about ( = 4.66, S.D. = 0.48). 2) the suitability of developing an Activity-Based Learning Lesson Plan is about ( = 4.68, S.D.= 0.43). and 3) the developing of the English Listening and Speaking Skills of Grade 4 Students had higher scores than those before using Activity-Based Learning by Role play, Simulation Activities, and Play Games.
