Abstract

This research aimed (1) to develop a learning activity package based on play-based learning and Thai traditional games to enhance the English vocabulary ability of primary school students, and (2) to study the efficiency and effectiveness of the developed learning package on students’ vocabulary ability, as well as their opinions toward the activities. The sample consisted of 35 Grade 3 students from a local administrative organization school in Pathum Thani Province, selected by purposive sampling. The research instruments included (1) the play-based learning activity package using Thai traditional games, (2) an English vocabulary ability test, (3) a vocabulary learning log, and (4) a student opinion interview form. Quantitative data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and dependent t-test, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis.

The results showed that (1) the students’ post-test mean score of English vocabulary ability (M = 22.80, SD = 3.56) was significantly higher than the pre-test mean score (M = 15.26, SD = 3.78) at the .001 level (t(34) = 10.62, p < .001, Cohen’s d = 1.80); (2) the students demonstrated noticeable improvement in vocabulary knowledge and usage, particularly in spelling, pronunciation, and the ability to use words correctly in sentences; and (3) the students expressed highly positive attitudes toward the learning activities, reporting enjoyment, engagement, and increased confidence in using English vocabulary naturally and effectively.
