Impacts of Economic and Stakeholder Telecommunications Mergers

Abstract

This article aims to 1) study the environmental factors affecting telecommunications mergers in Thailand, 2) examine the economic impact on businesses in relation to telecommunications mergers, 3) analyze the effects on stakeholders involved in telecommunications mergers, and 4) develop strategies to mitigate the economic and stakeholder impacts arising from telecommunications mergers. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing relevant concepts and theories related to mergers in the telecommunications industry from economic, corporate governance, and stakeholder perspectives as the research framework. The research area focused on True Corporation Public Company Limited. The sample group consisted of 37 individuals, including executives, shareholders, employees, customers, and business partners within the Thai telecommunications industry, selected through purposive sampling. The research tools used were 1) semi-structured interviews and 2) focus group discussions. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis and presented in a descriptive manner. The research findings indicate that the environmental factors influencing mergers include changing economic conditions, high investment requirements for new technologies, and stricter competition laws. Regarding economic impact, it was found that telecommunications mergers enhance investment capacity and technological development. However, they also reduce market competition and may lead to increased service prices. The positive impact on stakeholders reveals that business operators benefit from cost reduction and an expanded customer base, whereas consumers may experience fewer service options. Findings from this study suggest the implementation of effective consumer protection measures, strict government oversight, and the promotion of fair competition to allow new service providers to enter the telecommunications market. Additionally, workforce transition planning should be established to support employees affected by mergers, ensuring that telecommunications mergers contribute to industry growth without adversely affecting the overall economy.
