แมว” ในภาษาและวัฒนธรรมไทย (“Cat” in Thai Language and Culture)

บทคัดย่อ  

            แมวเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงที่มีอยู่ในสังคมไทยมาอย่างยาวนาน โดยแมวนั้นเข้ามามีบทบาทต่อการใช้ภาษา และวัฒนธรรมประเพณีของไทย บทความนี้จัดทำขึ้นโดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาสำนวนไทยที่ปรากฏคำว่า “แมว” และศึกษา “แมว” ที่ปรากฏในสังคมวัฒนธรรมไทยผ่านประเพณีและพิธีกรรม ผลการศึกษาพบว่าสำนวนที่ปรากฏคำว่า “แมว” นั้นพบทั้งสิ้น 32 สำนวน สำนวนเหล่านี้นำมาใช้เปรียบเทียบกับพฤติกรรมของบุคคล โดยสะท้อนให้เห็นพฤติกรรมที่พึงประสงค์และพฤติกรรมที่ไม่พึงประสงค์ของคนในสังคมไทย นอกจากนี้ยังนำมาใช้เปรียบเทียบกับเหตุการณ์หรือสถานการณ์ต่าง ๆ เพื่อช่วยอธิบายเรื่องราวให้เข้าใจได้ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น ด้านวัฒนธรรมพบว่า “แมว” มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับความเชื่อและวิถีชีวิตของคนในสังคมไทยตั้งแต่เกิดจนตาย โดยแมวเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในประเพณีการเกิด การแต่งงาน นอกจากนี้แมวยังเป็นสัตว์ที่ใช้ในพระราชพิธีเฉลิมพระราชมณเฑียรซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในพิธีเนื่องในพระราชพิธีบรมราชภิเษก และใช้ในพิธีกรรมขอฝน (แห่นางแมว) ในสังคมไทยอีกด้วย

Abstract

            Cats have long been kept as pets in Thai society. Evidently, they exert considerable influence on the way Thais use their language and on the local traditions with which they live. The present study aims to study Thai idioms containing the word “cat” and to investigate sociocultural functions of “cats” in Thai traditions and rituals. Thirty-two idioms reveal that “cat” is used metaphorically with human behaviours, depicting both satisfactory and unsatisfactory behaviours of people in Thai society. Moreover, these idioms are figuratively employed to enhance the understanding of certain events and situations. Concerning Thai culture, “cats” are inextricably intertwined with Thais’ beliefs and ways of life from birth through death. That is, cats are used in many Thai local traditions related to birth and marriage as well as in many important local rituals such as in the ceremony of assumption of the royal residence, one of the procedures of the Royal Coronation Ceremony of each King of Thailand and rain praying (Hae Nang Maew) in Thai society.
