The Influence of Demographic Variables on Big 5 Personality Traits of the Personnel in Private Higher Education Institutions

Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1) to study the big 5 personality traits of the personnel in private higher education institutions; and 2) to investigate the influences of demographic variables, e.g. gender, age, educational levels, income, and job positions, on big five personality traits of the personnel in private higher education institutions. Questionnaires were employed to collect data from 385 personnel. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Multivariate analysis of Variance: Two-way MANOVA. The findings revealed that the mean of big 5 personality traits, that is, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Openness to Experiences, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism, were high, with the mean (\inline \bar{x}) between 4.27–4.37 and the standard deviation between .525–.627. It stated that gender had an influence on Extraversion, while educational levels had an effect on Openness to Experiences, Extraversion and Neuroticism. Finally, while both income and work positions had an impact on all five personality traits, age had shown not to have an influence on any of those variables.
