The Reflection from Thai Cinema after the Transition to the New Millennium

Abstract

Thai film has long been a popular entertainment medium. It has not only a tight relationship with the Thai society, but can also be used in reading the context of the society in the period it represents. With the inclination to explore Thai film beyond its entertainment value, this article proposes to:

1. Give the summary of the Thai film industry during the past 10 years

2. Analyze the role and impact of Thai film towards the Thai society

3. Identify a possible scenario regarding the Thai film industry

Broadly speaking, the Thai film industry in the past 10 years earned astonishing success. Its growth was steady; up to 37 films were released annually with a wide variety of film genres available. After converting into percentage, the growth rate is approximately at 35% a year.

As to the role and impact, it can be viewed in 8 angles: (1) Thai film and the elevation of quality, (2) Thai film and the reflection of society, (3) Thai film and political interests, (4) Thai film and cultural communication, (5) Thai film and adolescence, (6) Thai film and gender issues, (7) Thai film and the construction of new standard, and (8) Thai film and the incorporation of new media.

Regarding the tendency, Thai film will hold on to its function in conveying the directors’ viewpoints which will mirror the pictures of the society while the quality of production will still be retained.

ภาพสะท้อนจากหนึ่งทศวรรษหลังการข้ามผ่านสหัสวรรษของภาพยนตร์ไทย

ท้อนภาพที่เกิดขึ้นในบริบทของสังคมไทยแต่ละยุคสมัยได้อย่างชัดเจน บทความชิ้นนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์หลัก 3 ประการ คือ 1. เพื่อสรุปถึงทิศทางการเปลี่ยนแปลงของอุสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ไทยในรอบ 10 ปีที่ผ่านมา 2. เพื่อวิเคราะห์ถึงบทบาทและ ผลกระทบของภาพยนตร์ไทยต่อสังคมไทยยุคปัจจุบัน 3. เพื่อแสดงความเห็นเกี่ยวกับแนวโน้มของการพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรม ภาพยนตร์ไทยต่อไปในอนาคต การศึกษาครั้งนี้พบว่าทิศทางการเปลี่ยนแปลงของภาพยนตร์ไทยตลอดระยะเวลา 10 ปีที่ผ่าน มา มีอัตราการขยายตัวอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยเฉลี่ยประมาณปีละ 37 เรื่อง คิดอัตราการเติบโตเฉลี่ยประมาณร้อยละ 35 ต่อปีซึ่งมี ภาพยนตร์ไทยหลากหลายแนวที่ถูกนำเสนอ อันประกอบด้วย ภาพยนตร์แนวชีวิต ภาพยนตร์แนวตลก ภาพยนตร์แนวรัก โรแมนติก ภาพยนตร์แนวสยองขวัญ ภาพยนตร์แนวลึกลับ ภาพยนตร์แนวสะท้อนสังคม เป็นต้น ส่วนบทบาทและ ผลกระทบของภาพยนตร์ไทยต่อสังคมไทยยุคปัจจุบันนั้น สามารถแบ่งออกเป็นประเด็นใหญ่ๆ ได้8 ส่วน ประกอบด้วย 1. ภาพยนตร์ไทยกับการสร้างมาตรฐานคุณภาพ 2. ภาพยนตร์ไทยกับการสะท้อนสังคมไทย 3. ภาพยนตร์ไทยกับบทบาท ทางการเมือง 4. ภาพยนตร์ไทยกับการสื่อสารวัฒนธรรมไทย 5. ภาพยนตร์ไทยกับเด็กและเยาวชน 6. ภาพยนตร์ไทยกับความ หลากหลายทางเพศ 7. ภาพยนตร์ไทยกับการสร้างมาตรฐานและกฎเกณฑ์ใหม่ๆ 8. ภาพยนตร์ไทยกับการบูรณาการสื่อ สมัยใหม่ สำหรับแนวโน้มต่อไปในอนาคตของภาพยนตร์ไทยจะยังคงทำหน้าที่ในการถ่ายทอดมุมมองของผู้กำกับเพื่อ สะท้อนภาพต่างๆ ของสังคมไทยภายใต้มาตรฐานการสร้างที่มีคุณภาพมากขึ้นต่อไป
