The primary aim of this paper is 1) to conduct an in-depth investigation into the current status of China's management of interests in the Mekong River, as well as 2) to explore the implications of this management approach for Laos. To achieve this, the study will employ rigorous research methods, including a thorough analysis of relevant news reports, official documents, and scholarly articles. Ultimately, the findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of China's management of the Mekong River and its broader implications for the region.
China's management of interests in the Mekong River has resulted in negative impacts on Laos, despite the country's heavy dependence on and economic benefits derived from Chinese investment and infrastructure projects. The effects of China's management approach have manifested in various ways, including environmental degradation, loss of income, displacement of local communities, and the erosion of natural resource sovereignty. These effects have become increasingly apparent in recent years. Beyond Laos, other countries in the Mekong River basin have also experienced similar negative impacts. Thus, it is crucial to examine the implications of China's management of the Mekong River and identify potential solutions to mitigate its adverse effects. Laos looks forward to the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) framework as a potential avenue for resolving and managing China's interests in the Mekong River basin in an efficient and equitable manner. It is hoped that the MLC can provide a platform for constructive engagement and collaboration between China and Laos in the future, to ensure that China's management of the Mekong River aligns with the needs and interests of Laos and the region as a whole. By promoting greater dialogue and cooperation, it is possible to mitigate potential negative impacts and maximize benefits for all stakeholders involved.
