The Development of Analytical Thinking Skills of UBRU Students from Reading English Academic Articles

Abstract
The purposes of this study were : 1) to develop the analytical thinking
skills in the cause and effect relationships of English academic
articles, 2) to compare the proficiency in reading of English academic articles
before and after the input of the Research-Based Learning (RBL) theory, and
3) to find the satisfaction level of students towards the Research-Based
Learning theory. The populations of the study were 110 second year English
and Business English major students at Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat
University, selected via a purposive sampling technique. The subjects were
studied in the class of Reading English II in the second semester academic of
year of 2014 and the first semester of 2015. The research instruments were a
pre-test, a post-test and a satisfaction survey. The data were analyzed by using
dependent samples t-test, mean and standard deviation. The results found that
1) The RBL theory helped develop the subjects’ analytical skills in the cause
and effect relationships by reading English academic articles. 2) The subjects’
reading proficiency of English academic articles after the treatment was
statistically significant at a level of p ˂ .01. 3) The results from the survey
revealed that the subjects mean overall satisfaction score toward the process
of the RBL theory was 4.40, which means the subjects were satisfied with the
process of the RBL theory.
