The Su Khwan Ritual Of Southern Ian: Towards The Theatrical Characteristics Of The Ruam Mongkon Jong Dai Dance

Abstract

            The content of this academic article aims to present the su khwan (soul-calling) ritual, a long-standing traditional ceremony of the Southern Isan people that reflects their beliefs, faith, and cultural values. This article focuses on the study of the Southern Isan su khwan ritual through the dimension of dance identity (natyalak), with particular emphasis on the performance of Ruem Mong Ko Won Chong Dai, a ritual dance performed as part of the ceremony. The study involves the collection of data and content analysis of the Southern Isan su khwan ritual and the dance elements of Ruem Mong Ko Won Chong Dai.

             The findings reveal a profound relationship between the su khwan ritual and the Ruem Mong Ko Won Chong Dai performance. The su khwan ritual serves as the core content, essence, and philosophical foundation that shapes the Ruem Mong Ko Won Chong Dai dance. This relationship is reflected through dance movements, song lyrics, costumes, and other performance elements. Consequently, the Southern Isan su khwan ritual and the Ruem Mong Ko Won Chong Dai performance exemplify Southern Isan dance identity, expressing the cultural beauty, local wisdom, and belief systems of the Southern Isan people.
