Abstract

               This study, entitled An Analysis of the Saw U Performance of Cherd Chin in the Style of Khru Chaluay Jiyajan, aimed 1) to analyze the melodic progression of the Saw U performance of Cherd Chin in the style of Khru Chaluay Jiyajan, and 2) to examine the musical characteristics and special techniques employed in this performance style. A qualitative research methodology was adopted. Data were collected through document review, related research studies, interviews, and musical analysis focusing on musical characteristics, rhythm, scale systems, melodic progression, and special performance techniques. The case study involved Khru Nattawit Jiyajan.

             The findings revealed that Khru Chaluay Jiyajan received musical transmission from Phra San Pleng Sarueng (Bua Kamonwatin) and subsequently passed on this musical lineage to his nephew and students within his pedagogical tradition. The tonal systems identified in the Saw U performance include the upper phiang-or mode and the lower phiang-or mode, with melodic progressions corresponding closely to the khong wong patterns. The performance incorporates various melodic idioms, including ornamental passages with pitch leaps, finger-pattern sequencing, the use of klon fak phrases, sustained tones, repeated phrases and sentences, and distinctive special melodic formulas that constitute the stylistic identity of this tradition. The special performance techniques observed include string pressing using the finger pad alternated with fingertip pressure, finger flicking, bow flicking, phrom pra, phrom pit, and phrom poet techniques, string sliding, finger rolling, pitch blending, vocal-like ornamentation (uean), vibrato (khayee), circular bowing (si khong), and double-bow techniques (lak khan chak or second bowing). These characteristics contribute to a soft and continuous tonal quality, cohesive melodic phrasing, enhanced performer agility, and a distinctive performance style characterized by an energetic, vigorous, and lively rhythmic expression.
