Abstract

This research on natural dyeing from beach morning glory through creative tie-dye techniques for sustainable textile product design aimed to: 1) study the properties and dyeing process of natural dyes extracted from beach morning glory using creative tie-dye techniques; 2) develop products from naturally dyed fabrics produced from beach morning glory using creative tie-dye techniques; and 3) investigate consumer satisfaction toward the product designs of naturally dyed fabrics from beach morning glory using creative tie-dye techniques.

The research was conducted in the Phithak Islands area, Chumphon Province. The study examined the dyeing process using beach morning glory combined with natural mordants, namely limewater and iron-rust water. Creative tie-dye techniques were applied, and the resulting dyed fabrics were tested according to the Thai Industrial Standards TIS 121 Vol. 3: 2009. The results indicated that the tie-dyed fabrics demonstrated good to very good color fastness to washing and light exposure, whereas color fastness to rubbing ranged from low to moderate levels, which is a common characteristic of natural dyes. Subsequently, the tie-dyed fabrics were developed into 3 product types: casual clothing, bags, and hats.

The consumer satisfaction study involving 100 participants revealed that the overall satisfaction toward naturally dyed fabric products from beach morning glory using creative tie-dye techniques was at the highest level. The aspects receiving the highest satisfaction were product usability and the role of products in promoting tourism, followed by tie-dye pattern design and product color usage. The findings reflect that beach morning glory has potential as a natural dye source for the development of creative textile products and can be further developed into textile products aligned with the concept of sustainable development in social, economic, and environmental dimensions.
