SURREALISM IN PAINTINGS OF H.S.H. PRINCESS MARSI SUKHUMBHAND PARIBATRA

Abstract

This article aims at examining the surrealism expressed in the paintings of H.S.H. Princess Marsi Sukhumbhand Paribatra which is related to life and death. The theory of Terry Barret who is an art critic and specialist summarizing eight identities of surrealism in René Magritte’s work was applied as the analysis framework to identify the surrealism in the paintings of H.S.H. Princess Marsi Sukhumbhand Paribatra. The results of the analysis showed that Barret’s framework of eight principles was not able to perfectly and thoroughly analyze Princess Marsi’s paintings. The researcher, therefore, proposes the two additional principles which are the Disproportion and Modified Colour.  These additional principles can comprehensively and accurately analyze the identities of the artworks. This means the identification of the surrealism in Princess Marsi’s paintings can be achieved. Additionally, the concept of patterns and symbols displayed in the works reflect the identity expressed through the paintings.
