Civil Societies in Southeast Asia: The Myths and Limitations in Supporting Democracy

This article aimed to argue the mainstream concept of democracy that ‘strong civil society will benefit to democracy’ through the case of civil society in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia Cambodia and Thailand. The key finding is the context of civil society in these countries is based on a secondary concept that suggested that strong civil society may not always support to democracy, because of civil society was often restricted and blocked by political authorities. Ultimately, civil society and democracy in this region, was just a tool that used to claim the legitimacy of the actions of a group of people or a group of organizations with a background, goal or interest in what they truly want.
