ลองจินตนาการว่า เมื่อท่านเดินเข้าไปในห้างสรรพสินค้าแห่งหนึ่ง ท่านก็ได้รับข้อความที่ส่งมายังโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ของท่าน เพื่อแจ้งการได้รับส่วนลดสำหรับการซื้อสินค้าในห้างสรรพสินค้าแห่งนั้น หรือจินตนาการว่าท่านกำลังขับรถอยู่บนถนนแห่งหนึ่งที่ท่านอาจจะไม่คุ้นเคย และท่านสามารถใช้โทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ หรือเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์โน้ตบุ๊กที่สามารถเชื่อมโยงแบบไร้สายกับเครือข่ายอินเตอร์เน็ต เพื่อขอข้อมูลที่ต้องการ เช่น ที่ตั้งของปั้มน้ำมันที่ใกล้ที่สุด ข้อมูลของร้านอาหารที่ใกล้ที่สุดที่ขายอาหารประเภทที่ท่านต้องการรับประทาน ข้อมูลสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวที่น่าสนใจในบริเวณนั้น หรือสอบถามว่ามีเพื่อนของท่านอยู่ในบริเวณใกล้เคียงบ้างหรือไม่ หากท่านรู้สึกว่า เหตุการณ์สมมติที่กล่าวมานี้เป็นสิ่งที่น่าสนใจ และเป็นประโยชน์ แสดงว่าท่านกำลังให้ความสนใจ หรือเห็นประโยชน์ของบริการที่เรียกว่า โลเคชันเบสเซอร์วิส ซึ่งเป็นบริการอย่างหนึ่งที่ใช้ประโยชน์ของการระบุตำแหน่งของอุปกรณ์แบบไร้สาย เพื่อเสนอบริการและข้อมูลสารสนเทศแก่ผู้ใช้บริการ โดยในบทความนี้ จะได้กล่าวถึงความหมาย ส่วนประกอบที่สำคัญ การทำงาน ประโยชน์การใช้งาน และข้อที่ควรคำนึงถึงของโลเคชันเบสเซอร์วิส

Abstract

Imagine as you just about to enter a department store, you receive a text message on your mobile phone informing you of discounts and promotion campaigns taking place in this particular department store. Or, think of a situation when you are driving on an unfamiliar street and you can request some information, using your mobile phone or your notebook computer with wireless connection to the Internet, about the location of the nearest gas station, the direction to a nearby restaurant serving your favorite cuisine, about the interesting tourist spots around the area, or even tracking whether any of your friends are close by. If you feel that these example situations mentioned above are useful and attractive, you are interested in “Location-based Services” or “LBS”. Location-based Services are the services which make use of a positioning system of mobile devices in order to deliver service and/or information to users. In this article, some questions like, what LBS is, what the basic components of LBS are, how LBS works, how LBS is useful, and the concerns of using LBS will be discussed.
