Study of Vietnamese Workers in Thailand and Vietnam: Preliminary Survey

Abstract

This article is a preliminary survey of the Vietnamese workers in Thailand and Vietnam. The data encompass theses, dissertations, articles and books collected in Thailand and Vietnam from 1990s-2020. Thai and Vietnamese documents are then examined, i.e. they are classified, organized and analysed. The research result indicates that there are twenty-one studies about Vietnamese workers, nine of which were written by Thai academics. Those researches mainly examined Vietnamese workers in the Northeast (Ubon Ratchathani / KhonKaen / Udon Thani), Vietnamese labourers in Bangkok, and exportation of labour. It is found that those Thai scholars who studied Vietnamese migrant workers were those who came from Vietnamese experts in the field of social sciences such as Watcharee Srikham, Silapakit Teekantikun and Thanyathip Sripana. For the Vietnamese counterparts, there are twelve studies and the main topics were the state and its management of Vietnamese labour export and the exportation of Vietnamese labour to foreign markets (Asia, Middle East, Europe, ASEAN, etc.). Most of them were from economic perspectives, while the research in  ASEAN market was not found, especially Thailand.
