การแต่งงานข้ามวัฒนธรรมเป็นประเด็นที่นักวิจัยไทยให้ความสนใจมากขึ้นโดยเฉพาะการศึกษาภายใต้คำสำคัญว่าด้วย “เขยฝรั่ง” และ “เมียฝรั่ง” ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่หน่วยการวิเคราะห์จะเจาะลึกในชุมชนชนบทของภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ เพื่อชี้ให้เห็นอำนาจโลกาภิวัตน์ที่กำลังเปลี่ยนแปลงระบบคุณค่าและสังคมวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่นอีสาน อย่างไรก็ตามข้อมูลที่ขาดหายไปในงานวิชาการคือภาพเสนอเกี่ยวกับเขยฝรั่งและเมียฝรั่งในวรรณกรรม บทความนี้จึงมุ่งนำเสนอภาพชีวิตสังคมของผู้ที่เกี่ยวโยงกับเขยฝรั่งและเมียฝรั่งที่รวมไว้ในรวมเรื่องสั้นชุด “สาบอีสาน” จัดพิมพ์โดยสโมสรนักเขียนภาคอีสาน ทั้งนี้เนื้อหาของเรื่องเขยฝรั่ง เมียฝรั่งในเรื่องสั้นที่รวมอยู่ในชุด “สาบอีสาน” ได้ชี้ให้เห็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงระบบคุณค่าในสังคมอีสานด้วย “เสียง” นักเขียนอีสานที่เผยให้เห็นวาทกรรมของการพัฒนาไปสู่ความทันสมัย และอำนาจของการพัฒนานี้เองที่ทำให้เกิดการปะทะกันระหว่างวิถีจารีตและความทันสมัย ทุนได้ทำให้ผู้หญิงอีสานไม่กลัวที่จะเปลี่ยนแปลง และผู้หญิงอีสานก็คือฐานรองรับอำนาจผู้ชายตะวันตกเพื่อตอบโต้กับระบบคุณค่าเดิมจนทำให้เกิดการขยายตัวของทุนชนิดอื่นต่อไป
