การตั้งชื่อของคนลาว : คำและความหมาย

บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่ออธิบายลักษณะการใช้คำ และความหมาย ของคำเรียกชื่อของคนลาว โดยเก็บข้อมูลจากการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก จากผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญจำนวน 5 คน ประชากรลาวกลุ่มตัวอย่างจำนวน 58 คน และจากการสุ่มตัวอย่างรายชื่อบุคลากรในมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งชาติ สปป.ลาว จำนวน 207 ชื่อ รวมทั้งสิ้น 270 ชื่อ
ผลการศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นว่า คนลาวนิยมตั้งชื่อให้คำเรียกชื่อมีเสียงสัมผัสพยัญชนะหรือสระภายใน หรือมีความสัมพันธ์กับชื่อสมาชิกในครอบครัว สำหรับความหมายของคำที่ใช้ในการตั้งชื่อของคนลาวนิยมนำคำว่า คำ (ทอง) ทอง เพ็ด (เพชร) มะนี(มณี) แก้ว พอน(พร) สี(ศรี) บัว(ดอกไม้บูชาพระ) มาใช้ในการตั้งชื่อ เพราะมีความหมายสื่อไปถึงความร่ำรวย หรือสิ่งที่ดีงาม ซึ่งคำเหล่านี้สามารถนำมาตั้งชื่อได้ทั้งเพศชายและ เพศหญิง ส่วนการใช้คำระบุเพศในการตั้งชื่อมีจำนวนน้อย เช่น สมพิด พิมพา สีสะหมอน สีวิไล บัววัน สุลิยา สุลี แสงสุลี หัดสะดี ซึ่งชื่อเหล่านี้สามารถนำมาใช้ตั้งชื่อได้ทั้งเพศชายและเพศหญิง
ABSTRACT
This article is intended to characterize the language in naming of Lao people in two issues: words and meanings. The data is collected from in-depth interviews with 5 key informants, a sample population of 58 Lao people who live in Vientiane Principal Lao PDR. and a sample names of 207 officers in National University, Lao PDR. The total data is 270 names.
The study shows that Lao people prefer to name their children for the rhyme of consonant or vowel in names or the relation of the family members’ names. The meaning of Lao people’s names is found that most of them are the words “kham” X7e? which mean ‘gold’ or other words such as “thong” Xmv’? ‘gold’, “phet” Xgraf? ‘diamond’, “manee” X,tou? ‘jewel’, “kaew” Xcdh;? ‘crystal’, “phon” Xrvo? ‘wish’, “see” Xlu? ‘good’ and “bua” X[q;? ‘lotus’ because these words mean the richness or good things and they can be used to name both a male and female. The study also shows a few specific gender words in naming such as “buawan” X[q;;ao? , “phimpha” Xry,rk? ,“somphit” Xlq,ryf? ,“seesamon” Xlults,vo? ,“seewilai” Xlu;yw]? , suliya” Xl5]ypk? , “sulee” Xl5]u? , “sangsulee” Xcl’l5]u? and “hatsadee” Xsafltfu? which can be used for the names of men and women.
