Les belles images ผลงานชิ้นเอกของซีโมน เดอ โบวัวร์ที่สะท้อนสถานภาพของผู้หญิงในสังคมชนชั้นกลางฝรั่งเศสยุคทศวรรษ 1960 นวนิยายเล่มนี้กล่าวถึง โลรองซ์ (Laurence) หญิงสาว ผู้เพียบพร้อมเป็นทั้งภรรยาของสถาปนิกรุ่นใหม่และแม่ของลูกสาว 2 คน จากอาชีพที่อยู่ในแวดวงโฆษณาทำให้เธอได้เรียนรู้ว่าชีวิตปัจจุบันของเธอว่างเปล่าและตัวเธอเองก็รู้สึกเย็นชาและเฉยเมยต่อทุกสิ่งรอบตัวเธอ ขณะที่ดำเนินชีวิตอยู่ใน “กรอบภาพแห่งความงดงาม” ท่ามกลางผู้คนแวดล้อม อาทิ พ่อ แม่ ลูก สามี เพื่อนๆ ของแม่และของสามี โลรองซ์กลับมีเพียงพ่อที่เข้าใจความคิดและความรู้สึกของเธอ เธอจึงเฝ้าถามตัวเองและพยายามเข้าใจสิ่งผิดปกติในตัวเธอแต่ก็ไม่พบคำตอบ เธอรู้แต่เพียงว่า เธอต้องการช่วยเหลือคาเธอรีน (Catherine) ผู้เป็นลูกสาวให้หลุดพ้นจากสังคมแห่งการบริโภคแห่งนี้ (société de consummation) และใช้ชีวิตอยู่อย่างมีความสุขที่แท้จริง
Abstract
“Les belles images” is one of Simone de Beauvoir’s outstanding novels which mirrors the status of the middle-classed French women in 1960s. The novel presented Laurence, a wife of a progressive architect and a mother of two daughters, who worked in the advertising business. She started to realize that her present life was absurd. She fell indifferent to everyting surrounding her. Her life was fixed in “the frame of beauty” encircled by her beloved people: parents, children, husband, husband’s friends and mother’s friends. The only person who understood her feelings and thoughts was her father. Laurence always doubted about her abnormality but found no answer. What she realized is to help her daughter, Catherine, to get away from this consuming society and live by her happy life.
