Abstract

This research was conducted with objectives to analyze and present factors that affect successful career paths of controllers working at the air traffic control center (en-route). The study employed qualitative research. The research methodology utilized in-depth interviews of key informants with no less than 20 years of on hand experience in en-route air traffic control including former executives and/ or trainers specialized in en-route air traffic control totaling 15 participants (informants). The data were analyzed using content analysis.

The results indicated that in order to be a successful air traffic controller four following factors have to be met, 1) physical factors, consisting of strong physical condition, required knowledge and necessary skills. 2) mental factors, consisting of self motivation, attitude and personal characteristics. 3) organizational factors, consisting of work system, work environment, training and human resource management. 4) functional factors, including colleagues support, social skills, emotional intelligence, work life balance and proficiency in English language. There are 2 levels in regard to guidelines presentations for successful career development.
1) Developing English Proficiency program, enhancing professional work related skills both Technical and Non Technical as well as creating environment for learning new experiences abroad. 2) Developing guidelines for recruitment at organizational level by ensuring that the participants can pass all the criteria in order to become air traffic controllers (Sure Selection), creating training courses (Instructor) professionally by considering remuneration, motivation, dignity, acceptance and readiness to perform duties with the organization until retirement (Commitment) thus creating harmonious and efficient work / life balance for all concerned.
