An Analysis of Needs and the Design of a Logistics System to Promote Cultural Tourism for the Elderly in Nonthaburi Province

This research aims to 1) analyze the needs and travel behavior of elderly individuals engaging in cultural tourism in Nonthaburi Province, and (2) design and develop an appropriate logistics system to support such tourism. The research is situated within the context of Nonthaburi, a culturally diverse province (home to Thai-Mon communities, historical temples, and located near Bangkok) amid Thailand’s transition into an aging society. The province faces systemic challenges such as limited public transportation coverage and a lack of senior-friendly facilities and signage. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining questionnaires and in-depth interviews with three key groups: elderly tourists, local communities, and tourism entrepreneurs in Nonthaburi. The main sample included 400 elderly tourists, 100 community members, and 20 entrepreneurs. Research tools were tested and validated for reliability. Preliminary findings indicated that most respondents were female, aged 60–65, and motivated to travel primarily by recommendations from family or friends (35.5%) and a desire for relaxation (33.75%). Social media was identified as the primary source of travel information (74%), highlighting the significant role of digital channels in elderly travel decisions. Based on the findings, a prototype logistics system was designed, covering three main flows: physical (accessibility, transportation, and facilities), informational (multilingual data, signage, and service point maps), and financial (secure payment systems). Additionally, three one-day cultural tourism programs were created, along with a bilingual web application (Thai-English) to support practical use by elderly tourists in the area. The study’s outcomes are expected to assist local authorities and tourism operators in enhancing convenience, safety, and the overall cultural tourism experience for the elderly in Nonthaburi, contributing to sustainable tourism development in an aging society.
