The Internal Sources of International Politics
Russo-Ukrainian War as the Extension of Domestic Politics in Russia
Keywords:
Russo-Ukrainian War, Second Image Reversed, Vladimir Putin, SilovikiAbstract
The so-called Russo-Ukrainian War that occurred after Russia declared special military operations on 24th February 2022 sparked academics worldwide to identify the causes of the war, which can be divided into three groups, or Waltz's three Images. However, this paper argues that delineating the causes of the Russo-Ukrainian War under each image may give a partial picture of what happened. Therefore, it proposes an alternative explanation based mainly on Gourevitch's ‘second image reversed’ and Waltz's second Image by dividing the argument into two parts. Firstly, the article considers the interactions between external factors, that lay conditions for domestic politics, and internal actors in Russian Politics: President Putin, who has been eager to strengthen internal political power; and the siloviki, who have seized the same opportunity to overshadow the liberals in Kremlin. The second argument focuses on the consequences of Putin and the siloviki's internal political victories on the Russian operation and direction in the War with Ukraine in order to achieve their goals, which in turn has forced Russia to continue waging war harshly and inflexibly in the future.
